N0.0034. Fulbourn Windmill - Landscape
Fulbourn Windmill stands on an outlier of the Gog Magog hills, just to the west of the village of Fulbourn village and five miles east from the centre of Cambridge.

The windmill, a Smock Mill, was built by Thomas Hunt of Soham in 1808 for the landowner and farmer, John Chaplin. It continued to operate until 1937; a lightning strike in 1933 was followed 3 years later by a storm which caused severe damage to the fantail and proved to be the final nail in the coffin in the operational life of the Mill.

The Mill is 42ft high, formed of an octagonal brick base, an oak framed smock and a cone-shaped cap sheathed in copper. The sails are double shuttered clockwise patent sails.

The interior of the Mill comprises 3 floors, with the middle, stone, floor hosting 3 sets of stones. Two stones were part of the original construction, with a third, which can also be driven independently through an external wheel attached to a tractor or steam engine, being added at a later date.

Restoration of the Mill by a group of local volunteers started in 1974. In 2013, a second restoration programme, under the direction of millwright Paul Kemp, started to replace all four sails, rebuild the fantail and complete some repairs to the winding curb. It is hoped that by mid 2016 the sails will again be turning and the cap turning itself to wind.
